How it started

My niece whose name is Romaisa (she’s half Moroccan!) would always draw me cute drawings and gift me handcrafted gifts. She reminds me a lot of myself when I was a kid. Always crafting and creating. Then one day I pulled out one of her drawings (I have saved them all) and I had the idea to make a Moroccan rug out of that. I booked a trip to Morocco and that’s how this journey started.

I saw hard working women struggling to make ends meet. Quickly I learned that current (not all!) rug business structures devalued the work and art of these Artisans. As an entrepreneur I believed I could create a better business model, a business in which the work and art of the Artisans are honorably valued.

With Romaisas, I want to ensure that Amazigh women and their families and communities become financially free, helping them to grow and invest for generations to come, while gifting the world with their art.

And for myself? It's freedom, to do what I love!

OUR JOURNEY

AMAZIGH HERITAGE

The weaving of rugs and other forms of art and expression have mainly been done by Amazigh women. The Imazighen (plural), i.e., free people are the original people of the Northern part of Africa.

Each rug is a women's work of art bearing the artistic heritage of generations of Amazigh women.

We want to honour this heritage and see how the art evolves beautifully and freely in today's world.

Each knot crossing past, present and future .

WOMEN WORKING TOGETHER

We buy our rugs directly from Amazigh women and see each woman face to face. We always pay the first asking price or more and never negotiate for a lower price. We do this in honor of who they are. We do this in hope these women in rural areas can provide for their families and invest for the generations to come.

COMMUNION

Sharing food in Amazigh culture symbolizes communion. Communion is where hearts meet and art evolves. I remember sitting on a rug, eating food together on this round low wooden dining table, sharing some words and signs with an open heart. That experience alone is priceless. Through Romaisas we give people an opportunity to share their stories with Amazigh Artisans. The Artisan will then communicate back through weaving, creating in that way a personal unique rug on a canvas that represents the dining table.

BUILDING THE FUTURE

10% of all our income is invested in rural communities in Morocco.

MEET THE ARTISANS

  • Handmade by Amazigh women

All our rugs are completely handmade with indigenous know how, passed down from generation to generation. Each rug holds a story and a blessing of a woman that knows how to get things done.

  • Premium wool

Wool is antibacterial and the wool we use comes from Moroccan herders from either the Middle Atlas or Siroua mountains. Ensuring the best quality wool that can be found in Morocco and the 3rd best quality in the world.

  • Natural dyed and washed

We use organic spice dyes to dye our rugs. Think of madder, saffron flowers, pomegranate skin, walnut hulls, alfalfa, indigo and so on. 0% chemicals are used in making and washing our rugs.

Follow us on our journey. We update regularly on Instagram. And if you ever want to go to Morocco... please give us a heads up. We would like to invite you!
